A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten iron rock. The lava from inside the volcano travels from the magma chamber, through the main vent and out through the crater and explodes.

A volcano erupts when pressure builds up. A volcanic eruption occurs when molten rock, ash and steam pour through a vent in the earth's crust. In an eruption, lava and rock shoot up through the crater and or fill the air with lava fragments.

Volcanic activity occurs at the boundaries of the earth's tectonic plates which are series of large blocks moving between each other. The movements of these plates plays a significant role in the type of volcano formed, which influences its shape.

Volcanoes affect people in many ways, some are good ways and some are bad ways. When there is ash it is best to get into your house and lock and cover the windows. If the ash is too heavy then it can be hard to breath.

Volcanoes cause the earth to vibrate and shake which leads to earthquakes, flash floods and much more. Volcanoes also damage things that are in its path, including people, houses and trees. But not all volcanoes erupt the same.

There are different ways for a volcano to erupt. One way is the effusive eruptions. This occurs when the  magma rises through the surface and flows out of the volcano as a viscous liquid called lava. There is also an explosive eruption. This occurs when the magma is torn apart as it rises and reaches the surface in pieces known as pyroclasts.

Volcanoes are described as active, dormant or extinct. They can be harmful and they can create other natural disasters. Some volcanoes are inactive and some are active.
